Lobatse
Geography and History
Lobatse is a town in South-East District of Botswana. It is located about 70 kilometres South of the capital of Botswana, namely Gaborone. The town is an administrative district, with a Town Council.
The first people to settle in Lobatse were the Bakgwaketse people and then later, the Bangwaketse people joined them in the eighteenth century. There are still archaeological remains existing from these early periods.
Activities/ Attractions
There are many things to do in Lobatse, including:
- There is a nature reserve located very close to Lobatse. This nature reserve is home to a variety of animals including the endangered white rhino.
- The High Court of Botswana is located in Lobatse. It has been standing since 1957 and has become a modern-inspired building since it re-opened in 1996.
- St. Mark’s Anglican Church, which is a stone structure built in 1934. You can still see this church standing strongly in Lobatse, still being used by the people.
- There are many nature tours available in Lobatse. The highest point in Botswana, the Otse Mountain can be found in Lobatse.
- Lobatse has a wetter and cooler climate than most places. This attracts many people to this wonderful town.

Businesses
In 1954 the colonial development co-operation constructed the Lobatse Abbatoir. This is now the Botswana Meat Commission.
The High Court of Botswana, the headquarters of the Department of Geological Surveys and the Lobatse Mental Hospital, the only mental institution in Botswana can be found in Lobatse.
The Botswana Prison Service (BPS) operates the Lobatse Prison.
