Gaborone
Geography and History
Gaborone is the capital and largest city of Botswana. Prior to this, it was just a small, traditional village named after chief Gaborone of the Batlokwa tribe. It is an administrative district in its own right, but is the capital of the surrounding South-East District. Locals often refer to the city as Gabs.
The discovery of diamonds shortly after Gaborone gained independence in 1966, led to a massive growth in the economy and now Gaborone is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. The city was named after Kgosi Gaborone, leader of the Batlokwa people, who migrated from their ancestral homelands in the Magaliesberg Mountains and in 1881 settled in the Tlokweng area. Gaborone literally means ‘it does not fit badly’ or ‘it is not unbecoming.”
What makes this city so unique, is that the visitor can enjoy all the familiar modern conveniences of home, but can gain entry into rural Africa, or wildlife areas – having then the best of both worlds.
