Shakawe
Geography and History
Shakawe is a village situated in the North-West District of Botswana at the beginning of the Okavango Delta, near Namibia and Angola. It is the gateway to the Northern part of the Okavango Delta and the Linyati area.
Travellers often regard Shakawe as an exit or entrance into Botswana or a starting point for a visit to the Tsodilo Hills located about 40 kilometres away.
Activities/ Attractions
A major attraction in Shakawe is the Tsodilo Hills, which is a World Heritage site with important rock art and a magical place where ancestral spirits dwell. In earlier years, their ancestors performed religious rituals to ask for assistance, and for rain. The meaning and symbolism of the rock art remain a mystery even today.
