Geography and History

This dusty, sprawling town in Botswana’s wild West has been the start of expeditions to the North West District of Botswana since the turn of the century, and it is now the safari capital of the country. For many tourists, Maun is the point of entry into the Okavango Delta, and often into Botswana, with direct flights from both Johannesburg and Gaborone. Maun is the administrative centre of Ngamiland District and the seat of power of the Batawana people.

The dramatic surge in the numbers of tourists coming to Botswana in the 1980s brought equally dramatic changes to Maun. Safari companies abound and their signposts dot the sandy parking lots.

Things to do in Maun include the following :

Maun Education Park: It is the hidden jewel of Maun - with over 10 giraffes, wildebeest, kudu, impala, zebras, lechwe, warthogs and great birding.
Nhabe Museum: Regular exhibitions and friendly staff to answer your questions or give advice. Don't miss their gift shop.
There is an ancient bridge that is supported by living trees in Matlapaneng, on your way to Moremi Game Reserve. The bridge is in a poor state and you might be the last to see it.

Businesses

Maun has modernised dramatically over the years introducing shopping centres, hotels and lodges as well as car hire, but retains a rural atmosphere and local tribesmen continue to bring their cattle to Maun to sell.

Tourism is the main industry although there is a growing manufacturing and services sector.
